Description
Whilst I set out designing this pattern, I was listening to the wonderful music of Loreena McKennitt. Her music has for many years been a journey of discovery, exploring the early roots of the Celts, and the cross-cultural fertilisation that was happening throughout Europe and beyond. I started wondering what the impact of all this travel was on local traditional art forms, after Marco Polo and others returned to their homes bearing not only spice and valuables, but decorative items as well.
I only need to look to Hindelopen, a town very close to my hometown in the Netherlands. Their traditional dress is made of floral fabric, imported from India. This beautiful and exotic Chintz was all the fashion, even though many of the villagers might never have set foot outside of their own region.
This pattern celebrates this mix of cultures: parts seem rooted in European tradition, whilst others are clearly influenced by the abstract geometric patterns of Islamic designs. As the world is veering towards a more extremist right and fascist way of thinking, I’d like to think that there is more that, as humans, there’s more that binds us together than sets us apart.
This pattern measures 239 by 239 crosses – embroidered over two threads on 32 count linen it would measure approximately 15” by 15” (38 by 38cm).
