Description

Letters from the North is a series of Scandinavian style cross-stitch samplers, of which this is the first. Fascinated by their simplicity and geometric abstraction I began designing my own samplers with a distinct folk aesthetic.

I found a beautiful selection of crowns that formed the basis of the decoration at the bottom of this sampler. Both American and Danish samplers inspired the alphabets.

Although I have opted for a monochrome red sampler, you can choose any colour or a mixture of your favourite colours. You can see my initials at the bottom of the sampler – please change them to yours and the year of creation using the alphabets provided. You will notice that in all three alphabets the letter “J” is missing, as is the letter “U” in the top one. Historically, the letter “I” would substitute for the “J”, and the “V” would be used instead of a “U”.

This sampler measures 164 stitches in height by 96 stitches width. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen, this pattern measures approximately 10 1/4” by 6” (26 by 15cm).
