A couple of years ago I made a pattern called The Floral Heart. This pattern could be seen as the sister pattern to that one, although The Nordic Heart is slightly larger.
In Hälsingland, Sweden, a particular kind of embroidery is often seen, where bold, rather simple patterns are stitched in red thread on white linens. I absolutely adore the simplicity of these traditional designs, and for this design I have tried to emanate that feel. I took the element of the traditional 8 leaf rose or star, and transformed it into a combination of a compass and a star flower. The central star is surrounded by smaller flowers, and the border of the heart is elaborate, yet minimal. I like that with the compass and the heart, it plays with the old saying Home is where the heart is.
The Nordic Heart is 137 stitches wide, and 131 stitches high. Embroidered on 32-count linen it would measure approximately 8 5/8 by 8 1/4 inches (22 by 21 cm).
