A recent visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum inspired me to design this cross-stitch sampler with two birds in a small tree. Inspiration came from the ornamentation on a 13th century column from southern Italy, originally carved in wood.
The two facing birds seem like rather primitively carved peacocks – originally a symbol of eternal life. This would make sense, as the pattern could be seen as a little tree of life.
This pattern measures 140 by 119 crosses. Stitched on 32 count linen, this would measure approximately 8 ¾” by 7 ½” (22x19cm).
