One of my customers recently asked if I had any Tolkien inspired designs, or if I would like to perhaps design something like that. As this was something that I had been thinking about for some time already, I decided it was time to just sit down and create a new pattern.
I did research into early Anglo Saxon art at the British Museum and read up quite a bit about the world of Middle Earth. The result you can see below, the Namárië Tapestry.

I love the idea of embroidered historical pieces that have falsely been named tapestries (think the Bayeux Tapestry for instance). Hence the “tapestry” reference in the title.
The design itself shows a variety of Middle Earth related elements – at the top the White Tree of Gondor with the crown and seven stars, and horses from Rohan. At the bottom we see two swans, a reference to the elves. The water serpent is a reference to the people of Númenor.
At the centre is a part of the elven poem Namárië – Galadriel’s lament in Lórien. I love the text and the sound of the poem, so I set it to music. When you purchase the PDF through my site you will also receive a free MP3 of this song in your downloads.
I hope you’ll enjoy this new design as much as I enjoyed creating it!
Happy stitching,
Jacob
