A late black Groningen sampler stitched by Anje Broekema in 1892. Although we don’t know with absolute certainty who Anje was, through research I’ve learned that Anje was probably the 19 year old daughter of a farmer in the north of Groningen. The booklet tells a little bit more about this sampler.
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
This design measures 229 crosses wide and 227 crosses high. It has a total of approximately 11950 crosses. If you are working on 32 count linen / 16 count aida, and you’re working with 2 pulled strands of 6-stranded floss you will require approximately 7 skeins of floss. This would be the minimum required amount, so make sure to buy one or two skeins extra if you want to make sure you have the same dye batch.
Below is a stitched size estimate for different kinds of fabrics. Note that you will require more floss for lower count fabrics, and less floss for higher counts:
28ct: 16 3/8” x 161/4” (41. 5 x 41. 2cm)
32ct: 14 3/8” x 14 1/4” (36. 4 x 36cm)
36ct: 12 3/4” x 12 5/8” (32. 3 x 32cm)
40ct: 11 3/8” x 11 3/8” (29. 1 x 28. 8cm)
46ct: 10” x 10” (25. 3 x 25. 1cm)
The original sampler was stitched on uneven linen, flattening the design. Horizontally, there are about 36 threads per inch, vertically there are about 40 per inch. She worked her sampler with black silk threads that have faded into a lovely deep, nearly rusty brown colour. It comes close to DMC 3371, although the colour on the sampler is heading more into the grey spectrum of browns.
Although you can use any floss to stitch this design, I would recommend stitching with a nice dark, subtly variegated floss. It will help to create a more rustic look. Make sure to check out Leo&Roxy Floss Co floss, exclusively available from my friend Caroline’s shop www.evertote.com in Canada.
The pattern has been split over 6 pages. After the 1st page you will notice a 3-cross wide greyed out border: this area is an overlap from the previous page, which will make it easier to find your way on the next page.
