This colourful and cheerful Red Deer Sampler comes with an interesting story linked to a turbulent time in Dutch history. The 20-page booklet delves into its history, the meaning behind the individual elements and has the chart split over 12 pages.

This design measures 271 crosses in width and 282 crosses in heighth. As there are some crosses ‘off the grid’, this design is not suitable to be stitched on aida. The sailor on the ship has a face stitched over 1 thread. Below is a series of common linen types and the approximate size of the finished design:
28 count linen: 19 3/8” x 20 1/8” (49.2 x 51.2cm)
32 count linen: 16 7/8” x 17 5/8” (43 x 44.8cm)
36 count linen: 15 1/8” x 15 5/8” (38.2 x 39.8cm
40 count linen: 13 5/8” x 14 1/8” (34.4 x 35.8cm)
46 count linen: 11 7/8” x 12 3/8” (29.9 x 31.1cm)
52 count linen: 10 3/8” x 10 5/8” (25.5 x 27.5cm)
I have charted this design with the closest approximations of DMC in mind – however, feel free to substitute your work with any floss of your liking. You can stitch with however many strands you want: the original sampler uses a variety of silks – in some parts these appear much thinner and a lot of the backing cloth can be seen through the stitches. If you find that some of the lighter stitches appear nearly invisible, you can always add an extra strand of floss to give those crosses more definition.
When working with two strands, you can choose to stitch with one pulled strand of the prescribed colour, and then pick a lighter or darker shade of a 2nd colour and make that the 2nd strand you stitch with. This can give an interesting subtle effect which would work particularly well on the branches around the deer (see back of booklet for more detail). You can choose to stitch with several alternative colours, so each bit of stitching produces a slight colour shift.
The original ground-cloth closely resembles Zweigart linen colour code 99 (pale cream)
On average you can stitch approximately 1800 to 2000 crosses when working on 32 count linen with two pulled strands over two threads of linen. Below you find the recommended colours and the amount of crosses each colour uses. Please feel free to substitute any or all of the colours with floss of your liking.
