In my work, I keep coming back to the beautiful folklore traditions of the Nordic countries, and in particular those of Hälsingland in Sweden. This design was started a few years ago after visiting the Nordiska Museet in Stockholm, where a large collection of textiles is on display. The traditional red thread on the white linen is so simple but effective, and it always inspires me in my work. I named it Hälsingland Blommor – Flowers from Hälsingland.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This design measures 199 crosses in width and height and has a total of 16496 crosses. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or over one on 16 count Aida), it would measure approximately 12 1/2” by 12 1/2” (31.5 x 31.5cm). When working with two pulled strands of floss from an 8-yard hank you’d need a minimum of 10 hanks to complete this project.
You can choose to stitch this design with one colour as charted, or you can use a variety of colours. Although you are free to pick any colour and cloth combination, I can highly recommend my favourite new floss company, Leo&Roxy Floss Co in Canada. Their “Falu Red” would be an excellent choice as a traditional Swedish red, but they have many wonderful colours to choose from. The floss is exclusively available through www.evertote.com
The pattern has been split over 6 pages. After the 1st page you will notice a 3-cross wide greyed out border: this area is an overlap from the previous page, which will make it easier to find your way on the next page. The design can be personalised with an alphabet and letter set within the booklet. There is also a Pattern Keeper compatible version included in your purchase.
