Description
The embroideries of the Swedish region of Hälsingland have long been a source of inspiration to me, ever since seeing them for the first time at the Nordiska Museet in Stockholm. The bed linens with their abstract leaf patterns, zig-zagging between stars and hearts, formed the inspiration for my cushion.
I took the idea of the “V” shape middle of a zig-zag, but repeated it four times around a central motif. From this shape outwards, I then decorated the outer border. Although completely unique, it still has the feel of embroideries from Hälsingland. You can stitch it in any colour you like – but if you truly want the Hälsingland feel, I would recommend using a rusty red colour on off-white linen.
This pattern measures 205 crosses in height and width. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen, it would approximately measure 12 7/8” by 12 7/8” (32.5 by 32.5cm).
