A lot of my favourite antique samplers were stitched by girls who had to make do with the materials they were given. They’d get the threads from their mothers’ sewing baskets, and would just mix cotton, wool, and silk (if they had access to that!). Whenever they’d run out of a colour, the work would continue with a substitute close to it.
I really love this idea of working with the materials that you have. With this in mind, I designed this pattern: I would love for it to be a feast of scraps, where folks use the flosses that match (or don’t) the colours that you like – using up those last bits and mixing and matching. So use the chart as a starting point, and use your creativity to come up with alternative colours or combinations whenever you run out. Don’t fret when floss runs out – continue with something new. The look of your finished piece will be very much how antique samplers were stitched, and it will add a lot of charm to your project!

I highly recommend checking out the fantastic linens and floss by Roxy Floss Co, exclusively available through www.evertote.ca in Canada. They have a great selection of lighter and darker linens, and without a doubt, you’ll find beautiful colour flosses to go with it. I’ve been working for quite some time with their materials and can honestly say that they are my favourites to work with!
The pattern features only full crosses and does not have any specialty stitches. A pattern keeper compatible file is included in your downloads.
