The Song of Summer was first published in the beautiful Japanese embroidery magazine Stitch Idees. I’m really happy to finally present this design to you in this form. For the pattern, I took inspiration from 18th and 19th-century Dutch woodblock penny prints, usually with popular verses and stories about famous people at the time, and often decorated with primitive folklore patterns in elaborate floral borders. At the centre is a little bird – though his appearance is humble and though he is but small, his song will carry through the air and move those who hear it.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

This design measures 183 crosses in width and 231 in height and has 16430 crosses. Please see the graph below for size- and floss estimates. Floss estimates are based on working with two pulled strands (14 – 18-count Aida or 28 – 36-count linen) or one strand (20-count Aida / 40-count linen and higher). It is, of course, up to you how many strands you want to use for your project. A three-cross greyed-out overlap area is found from the 2nd pattern page onwards to help you find your way.

As this is a monochrome pattern, you can stitch it in any colour or colours of your choice. I think it would look great with “Falu Red” floss stitched on “Biscuit,” both by Roxy Floss Co. (exclusively available through evertote.ca in Canada).
