Blythe Spirits (not to be confused with the Noœl Coward play Blythe Spirit) was first published several years ago in a Dutch magazine called Borduurblad. I wanted to create something for their Spring issue that captured a sense of carefree cheerfulness – whilst still looking at the rather strict language of traditional folk embroidery. I settled on the name Blythe Spirits for this pattern as I liked the mystery of it. As I write this, Spring appears to have finally made its way into the Netherlands, and each morning, I love listening to the song of all these little joyful birds in the city, singing and flying through the air like spirits of nature, promising warmer days yet to come.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

This design measures 133 crosses in width and 115 in height and has 7281 crosses. Please see the graph below for size- and floss estimates. Floss estimates are based on working with two pulled strands (14 – 18-count Aida or 28 – 36-count linen) or one strand (20-count Aida / 40-count linen and higher). It is, of course, up to you how many strands you want to use for your project. A three-cross greyed-out overlap area is found on the 2nd pattern page to help you find your way.

As this is a monochrome pattern, you can stitch it in any colour or colours of your choice. I think it would look great with “Falu Red” floss stitched on “Biscuit,” both by Roxy Floss Co. (exclusively available through evertote.ca in Canada).
