This charming red sampler was worked in 1915 in the province of Zeeland by a girl named Cornelia Boonman. As she hasn’t given us any clues to where exactly she lived or who her parents were, it is impossible to say with certainty who she was.
Cornelia stitched her sampler on white cotton evenweave fabric, approximately 30 threads per inch. She stitched a series of border and corner motifs, most likely taken from pattern booklets that were circulating among stitchers in the early 20th century. The borders are cleverly worked, framing the piece beautifully while displaying a total of eight distinct borders and corner motifs.
At the centre, she worked a beautiful plant motif with the words’ Ave Maria’ – Hail Mary. This was the archangel Gabriel’s greeting at the visitation to the Virgin Mary, letting her know she was expecting Jesus.
Though we don’t know exactly who Cornelia Boonman was, we do know that three girls by this name were born in 1904 in Zuid-Beveland in the province of Zeeland. The name Cornelia Boonman does not appear anywhere else in the Netherlands during this period, so we know that the sampler was worked by a Catholic girl in Zeeland (and most likely in Zuid-Beveland)!
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
This design has a stitched surface measuring 179 crosses in width and 149 crosses in height, with 7753 crosses and 225 backstitches. Please see the graph on the next page for size and floss estimates. Floss estimates are based on working with two pulled strands (14 – 18-count Aida or 28 – 36-count linen) or one strand (20-count Aida / 40-count linen and higher). It is, of course, up to you how many strands you want to use for your project. A three-cross greyed-out overlap area is found from the 2nd pattern page onwards to help you find your way.
Cornelia’s original sampler featured a hem worked in red floss – I opted to design a simple outline in crosss, but you could of course also stitch a hemstitch just like Cornelia!
As this is a monochrome design, you may stitch it with whatever colour (or colours) you wish. If you want to approach the look of the cover, I recommend the following Roxy Floss Co. flosses and linens
(all exclusively available through www.evertote.ca in Canada). “Inappropriate” is a gorgeous red and would be perfect for this sampler. “Arrowroot” would make for a perfect fabric to stitch on, as would “Porcelain”. As Roxy Floss Co. offers a wide range of colours, I recommend browsing the Evertote website to see what truly speaks to you.
