Description

I’m very excited to present you the 1st part of my 2019 SAL, entitled Hope. I took inspiration from Emily Dickinson’s beautiful poem that opens with these lines:

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –

Emily wrote these beautiful lines in the 19th century, but they still ring true today. I hope this sampler will be a meditation on hope, love and kindness. For one year, each month I will be releasing a part of this design. In the design you will first find the complete outline, where each month will be framed as seen in the image below.

You will notice that each month has rounded off corners, allowing for a little ornament to be stitched in the empty space. Part one comes with a set of 9 options for you to choose from. You can stitch just one design, or pick your favourites and scatter them around (as I did in the example above).

Besides having a choice in these ornaments, a couple of parts later in the year will come with multiple choice designs where you will decide which pattern you will stitch. These options will assure that each stitched sampler will be truly unique to the stitcher!

My Hope design measures 363 crosses in height and 249 crosses in width, and will measure approximately 15 5/8″ x 22 3/4″ (57.8 x 39.7cm)

As you will decide over the course of the year which designs you will be stitching, I can only give an estimate to the total stitches – which will be around 30000. This means that stitched with 2 pulled strands of 6-stranded floss on 32 count linen (or 16 count Aida) you will need between 118 and 150 metres of floss (15 to 19 skeins of DMC / Anchor).

The 2018 Mystery SAL proved how creative you all were in your interpretations of my design, and I really look forward seeing your personal interpretations! When you share your work on Instagram, make sure to use the hashtags #MFESAL2019 and #ModernFolkEmbroidery.
