These last few weeks I’ve been doing some research on a couple of Scottish samplers recently, in particular a sampler stitched by a girl from Ellon, Aberdeenshire.
As chance would have it, I got contacted a couple of days ago by someone from the Scotland about a stitching resort she’s organising in Aberdeen. Asking me about a thistle design (the national flower of Scotland), I decided to create one – and I’m very happy to present to you this little “Scottish” winter Thistle design!
The pattern features a couple of deer standing next to a flower pot featuring an abstract thistle, whilst all around snow is falling from the sky.
This design is 85 crosses wide and 75 crosses high. Stitched on 32 count linen (or 16 count Aida) it would measure approximately 5 3/8î by 4 5/8î (13.5 x 12cm). This design has a total of 2253 crosses, and worked with 2 pulled strands of DMC it would require approximately 10 metres of floss.
I’m stitching mine on 32 count “Slate” linen by Zweigart, using DMC 3829 for the design and 822 for the snowflakes, so it will look like the image on the cover.
Included in this design is a full alphabet and number set, plus some ornaments, which you can use to personalise your work. You can add as much or as little text as you wish. The dimensions of the alphabet chart are exactly those of the main design, so you can use the empty part to draw in your text.
I would love to see your interpretation of this design – so make sure to share your stitching on Instagram with the hashtag #ModernFolkEmbroidery
