A fun and cheerful sampler from 19th century Netherlands. This sampler has only full crosses and can therefor be stitched on either linen or aida. The pattern comes in colour, black and white, A4 and letter versions (see note at bottom of this page).

Description

In The Garden of Holland – 1857 is a cheerful and fun sampler, originally stitched over 150 years ago in the Netherlands and now fully charted for you. Although its maker is unknown, the sampler tells us quite a bit about where it was stitched and what can be found on the sampler. The booklet dives a little deeper into the elements found on this sampler.

I charted this using DMC regular 6-stranded floss in mind. However, feel free to replace any of the materials recommended to those of your preference. Below you can find the colours needed, the amounts of crosses in the design, and the estimated amount of floss, based on stitching on 32 count linen with two pulled strands:

This design measures 259 crosses in width and 243 crosses in height. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida), it would approximately measure 16 1/8″ by 15 2/8″ (41 by 38.5 cm). The legend in this chart gives the amount of crosses each colour has. As a general rule, you can stitch approximately 2000 crosses with one skein of 6-stranded DMC when you work with 2 pulled strands on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida).

The colours in this sampler were picked as closely as possible to the original sampler – however, they are only a suggestion. Do feel free to substitute some or all of the colours to those you want to use. I have charted the sampler with DMC floss in mind – but you can stitch it in any material you want to stitch with!
