Description
Here’s Clemence Regnier’s alphabet sampler. She only signed her sampler, but did not date it. This makes it is very hard to determine who Clemence was, when she stitched it, or even where she was from. From the name and subject matter we can assume that she was from either France or the Walloon part of Belgium. The lower half shows a monstrance and what i think might be candleholders. There’s also two very cute fruit trees that deviate from the all-red colour pallette of this sampler.
I guess this sampler was stitched in France in the late 19th, perhaps even early 20th century, as the letters (the narrow M and N, the extra high letters such as C, E, F etc.) are typical from the school samplers from this period in France.
The key with this chart gives a colour suggestion – but feel free to substitute any of the colours recommended. This sampler would even work fully stitched in one single colour.
DMC 3777, Terra Cotta Very Dark – (3462 crosses)
DMC 3802, Antique Mauve – (12 crosses)
DMC 3862, Mocha Beige Dark – (52 crosses)
DMC 612, Drab Brown Light – (199 crosses)
DMC 3022, Brown Grey Medium – (20 crosses)
DMC ECRU, Ecru – (38 crosses)
Clemence’s sampler measures 118 crosses wide and 107 crosses high. Stitched on 32 count linen, it would measure approsimately 7 5/8” by 6 3/4” (18.5 x 17cm). The dark red is the only colour that you will need about 2 skeins for – the other colours have very little crosses – and even when stitched all in red, 2 skeins should be enough to finish this project.
