Description
During the 19th century in the northern province of Groningen there was a brief fashion to stitch fully black samplers. Heika Hazelhoff’s 1856 sampler is one of those. On it she commemorated her wedding to Jan Addes de Boer.
The original sampler had a lot of crosses ‘off the grid’ (right between two crosses), and also featured half crosses when she didn’t have space to stitch any more. Somehow this worked, as her linen was very uneven and she stitched the half crosses on thick threads. For this reason I have chosen to clean up the pattern and make it full crosses only.
For those curious what the original sampler looked like, I am also including a special PDF chart of the exact pattern as stitched by Heika.
Although this is a monochrome sampler, don’t let this limit your choice of colour when stitching this sampler. So get creative and pick a colour (or colours!) that you like, and start stitching!
Heika’s sampler measures 340 crosses wide and 348 crosses high. Stitched on 32 count linen, it would measure approximately 21 ⅜” by 21 ¾” (54 x 55.2cm). With a total of 27717 crosses, you would require approximately 14 skeins of DMC when stitched with 2 pulled threads.
