A colourful sampler featuring many birds and animals stitched in England in 1858. This design is charted for DMC floss, and features full crosses, some crosses stitched ‘off the grid’ (right between two crosses) and one small animal stitched over one thread. It is suitable for linen and similar even-weave fabrics.

Description

What a lovely and colourful piece P.F.W.’s sampler is! The unknown girl who stitched this design used beautiful colours, which I have done my best to replicate for you using DMC floss. To get the best effect, you can stitch on some subtly over-dyed linen, which you can either purchase or you can try your own had of tea-dyeing!

The key with this chart gives a colour suggestion – but feel free to substitute any of the colours recommended. This sampler would even work fully stitched in one single colour.

P.F.W.’s sampler measures 249 crosses wide and 121 crosses high. The original was stitched on linen very close to 36 count, and measures approximately 13 7/8″ by 6 5/8″ (35×17). Stitched on 32 count linen, it would measure approximately 15 5/8” by 7 5/8” (39.5 x 19.5cm). As you can do roughly 2000 crosses on 32 count linen with 2 pulled strands, you should be able to stitch this with just 1 skein of the colours mentioned about
