AIO 1844 – PDF Pattern

11,00

height: 260 crosses
width: 202 crosses
total crosses: 14388
thread estimate: On average you can stitch approximately 1800 crosses with an 8 yard (7.3 metres) skein of 6-stranded floss, when working with 2 pulled strands over 2 on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida. This means that this pattern requires a minimum of 8 skeins. Working with one pulled strand gives a beautiful, slightly folkier look and requires only half the floss. This design has full crosses and some backstitching in the central tree of life motif.

I recently purchased a small group of samplers, of which AIO 1844 was one. I fell in love with its wonderful design. I did notice the coarseness with which this sampler was stitched: the material is no less than 10 / 11 threads per inch, resulting in quite a large design. When I purchased the sampler, I noticed that the border was cut off underneath the frame. If you’re lucky, it means that they just folded the corners around the backing. If you’re unlucky, they cut them off completely. In my case, it was a little bit of both.

Upon opening the sampler from its frame I noticed two things: the good thing was that there was quite a bit more stitchwork than could be seen at the front. The bad thing was that it was all glued to a cardboard backing with horrible animal glue. I did in the end manage to release the sampler from its backing, clean it, and I’m now able to display it in all its glory for the first time in many decades.

AIO stitched a series of trees of life on her sampler – the central large tree she decorated with beautiful backstitch ‘eyes’. At the top of both trees you will find the initials A and O. The trees of life are typical of Frisian samplers, but full black samplers are less common in Friesland and more common at this period in Groningen. I cannot say with certainty where it was stitched or who the stitcher was. At the bottom she signed it “AIO OUD 14 JAAR” – meaning “AIO 14 YEARS OLD”

TECHNICAL DETAILS:

A word of warning: irregular border allert! Most lines in this border are made up of 9 crosses. There are some instances however where AIO deviated from the pattern, and they measure 11 or 12 crosses. Please do count before stitching!

This sampler is 202 crosses wide and 260 crosses high. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida) it would measure approximately 12 5/8” by 16 3/8” (32 by 41. 5 cm). It has a total of 14388 crosses. On average, you can stitch approximately 1800 crosses with an 8 yard (7. 3m) skein of floss. When working with 2 pulled strands of floss you will require a minimum of 8 skeins.

Make sure to check out the Leo & Roxy Yarn Co flosses at www.evertote.com in Canada. These hand-dyed cotton flosses are wonderful to work with and come in a fantastic range of colours.

The pattern has been split over 9 pages. After the 1st page you will notice a 3-cross wide greyed out border: this area is an overlap from the previous page, which will make it easier to find your way on the next page.
