This charming Dutch sampler was stitched by Gerritje Broekhuis in 1848 in the province of Gelderland, who stitched a 2nd sampler in 1857 which is also available in my shop. Gerritje was a farmers daughter and this type of sampler is typical of the region it was worked in. I’ve discovered a fair bit about Gerritje and her family, which you can read about in the booklet for this design.
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
Gerritje’s sampler measures 169 crosses wide and 213 crosses high. Worked over two threads on 32 count linen it would measure approximately 10 1/2” by 13 3/8” (27 x 34cm). The pattern features full crosses only, no specialty stitches are used and it can be stitched on both linen or aida fabric.
The pattern uses a total of 12 colours which you can find below. On average, you can stitch approximately 1800 crosses with an 8 yard hank of floss when worked with 2 pulled strands over 2 threads on 32 count linen (or 16ct Aida). Only DMC 3011 uses 2286 crosses, so requires 2 skeins. The rest of the colours only require 1 skein.
