In reply to <a href="https://www.modernfolkembroidery.com/antiqueing-embroidery-hoops/#comment-79784">Elizabeth Snead</a>.

Hi Elizabeth! Sorry for the slow reply - I just noticed this one! So I really stitch by hand mostly, and don't tend to use either scroll frames or hoops. I did by an Elbesee standing frame that I'm very happy with. I use that one for extremely fine stitching (56 threads per inch) and for that I need good tension! :D

Thank you Allison! I'm quite jealous that you've got a bunch of actual antique ones! :D. I need to go out and hunt a bit more I think... until then, this will do! :D

This is a lovely tutorial. The antiqued hoop looks great and I will be trying it out soon. I have wrapped hoops with fabric strips, but painting hoops didn't have the look I wanted for some of my work and I don't want to use up all my actual antique hoops. This is the perfect solution. Thank you.

Thank you Meg! Powdered iron is used for natural dyeing, among other things. You can buy it in from WildColours (http://www.wildcolours.co.uk/html/mordants.html - look for the small iron bag on the page). You only need the tiniest bit of iron powder though, as this stuff is very strong! :)
