On a recent trip to Germany I created a series of new designs, including the Summer Kaleidoscope design, and this set of 8 smaller patterns. I wanted to created a series of squares that could be stitched as biscornu – the cute geometrical patterns sewn up in an intricate way to create a star-like pattern.

Inspiration for each pattern came from different cultures: there’s the Swedish geometric shapes as seen in traditional Hälsingland embroidery, patterns found in folk designs brought to the Americas by German settlers, and stylistic elements found in middle eastern art. I like that through the use of cross-stitch and a single colour, all of these elements somehow come together in such wonderful harmony.

TECHNICAL DETAILS:

Each of the 8 designs in this booklet measures 87 crosses in width and height. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida), they would approximately measure 5 1/2″ by 5 1/2″ (14 by 14cm). Stitched with 2 pulled strands of floss, each design requires approximately 1.5 skeins of DMC

These designs can be stitched up in any way you like – either as small individual pincushions, as biscornu, or perhaps all grouped together on one piece of fabric (as shown in the cover image). When stitching them as biscornu, it will be a fun mix-and-match game for you, as you can pick which panel will be on the front, and which one will go on the back.
