I created this design after coming back from a windy and particularly wet walk on Christmas day through the city of Koblenz. When I set out with the design, my subconscious must have suggested more warm and pleasant weather – and it has resulted in this Summer Kaleidoscope design!
Featured here are a series of borders, nearly all of which have strong diagonal lines. I love these types of borders, as they are found in many folklore motifs. Although the design is completely original and fully decorative, it does have a very summery and folklore feeling – reminiscent of Scandinavian red-work embroidery, and certain designs found in regions such as Palestine.
A Summer Kaleidoscope measures 383 crosses high and wide. It has a total of 53740 crosses, and stitched with 2 pulled strands of DMC on 32 count linen (or 16 count Aida) it would require approximately 27 skeins of floss. This is a large design, and stitched on 32 count linen it would measure approximately 24 by 24 inches (61 by 61cm). Make sure that you have enough fabric before you start this project!
