Description
Hidden for decades behind an oil painting, Ada Lilian Baldwin’s sampler was recently rediscovered, and came into my collection. The original sampler is in extremely poor condition, and what I present here is what Ada’s original sampler looked like when she stitched it in 1885, when she was 11 years old.
This tiny sampler is a perfect design for those wanting to stitch a sampler but feel intimidated by most period samplers that are much larger. It is also a great project for those wanting to make the transition from aida fabric to linen, as the sampler has a few crosses that fit in between two crosses (something that is very tricky to do on aida).
DMC 910, Antique Blue Medium – (212 crosses)
DMC 3021, Brown Grey Very Dark – (640 crosses)
DMC 934, Black Avocado Green – (602 crosses)
DMC 3787, Brown Grey Dark – (461 crosses)
DMC 3011, Khaki Green Dark – (372 crosses)
DMC 22, Venison – (441 crosses)
DMC 3778, Terra Cotta Light – (565 crosses)
DMC 301, Mahogany Medium- (63 crosses)
DMC 3046, Yellow Beige Medium – (676 crosses)
DMC 822, Beige Grey Light – (378 crosses)
This design measures 113 crosses in height and 90 crosses in width. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida), it would approximately measure 5 ⅝” by 4 ½” (14.5 x 11.5 cm). The legend in this chart gives the amount of crosses each colour has. As a general rule, you can stitch approximately 2000 crosses with one skein of 6-stranded DMC when you work with 2 pulled strands on 32 count linen. This means that for each colour you will require about half a skein or less of each colour.
The colours here are merely a suggestion, based on Ada’s original sampler. Do feel free to substitute some or all of the colours to those you want to use. I have charted the sampler with DMC floss in mind – but you can stitch it in any material you want to stitch with!
