Ann Gilmour Aged Eleven is my interpretation of a sampler stitched by Ann Gilmour in 1829 / 1830 in the parish of Beith, Ayrshire, in Scotland. To read more about this sampler, please click here.
When stitched on 32 count linen, the design measures approximately 7 1/2″ wide and 15″ high (19cm by 38cm). I would recommend stitching on Zweigart 32 count Belfast linen. I hand-dyed my linen to match that of the original sampler, an effect you can create yourself by tea-dyeing some white linen you have.
I designed the sampler using Weeks Dye Works floss, but the chart does give alternative DMC versions for the floss used. Below is an estimate of the floss used for this sampler.
WDW 2259 Cayenne (8 metres, 1595 crosses)
WDW 2197 Oscar (10 metres, 2196 crosses)
WDW 1154 Graphite (10 metres, 2339 crosses)
WDW 2254 Cinnabar (1 metre, 47 crosses)
WDW 1288 River Rock (4 metres, 282 crosses)
WDW 1106 Beige (8 metres, 1314 crosses)
WDW 4129 Swamp Water (4 metres, 484 crosses)
WDW 1223 Schneckley (3 metres, 301 crosses)
WDW 1246 Sage (4 metres, 464 crosses)
WDW 1201 Putty (4 metres, 528 crosses)
WDW 1196 Taupe (8 metres, 1102 crosses)
WDW 1295 Blackboard (1 metre, 99 crosses)
This sampler measures 229 crosses in height and 170 crosses in width. Stitched on 32 count linen, the finished piece measures approximately 36.5 by 27cm (14 3/8” x 10 6/8”).
