Big Socks, Big Clox is a period reproduction sampler based on a 18th-century sampler. It’s not 100% clear where it is from, but the girl with the initials HRG probably lived in Germany or Switzerland when she stitched her sampler. The word “Clox” refers to the long motifs seen on this sampler, as they are similar to the richly decorated pendulums found on antique clocks.
The 28-page booklet features various examples of antique Clox samplers and dives a little deeper into what makes these samplers so interesting.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This design measures 280 crosses in width and 487 in height and has 35089 crosses. Please see the graph below for size- and floss estimates. Floss estimates are based on working with two pulled strands (14 – 18-count aida or 28 – 36-count linen) or one strand (20-count aida / 40-count linen and higher). It is, of course, up to you how many strands you want to use for your project. A three-cross greyed-out overlap area is found from the 2nd pattern page onwards to help you find your way on subsequent pages.
You can use the alphabet and numbers on the chart to personalise your embroidery. There’s empty space on the 2nd and 5th row of alphabets which may be used to stitch the date and your name.
As this is a monochrome pattern, you can stitch it in any colour or colours of your choice. I think it would look great stitched with “Falu Red” stitched on “Biscuit”, both by Roxy Floss Co (exclusively available through evertote.ca in Canada.
