Here’s a little freebie for you: whether you are a returning customer, you have participated in one of my stitch-a-longs, or whether this is your first MFE chart – I want to say Thank You for the support and the interest that you all have shown in my work over all these years. I am very grateful for your continued support and am beyond excited to show you my plans for the coming year!

A little about this design: this is a little oak tree taken from a new period reproduction release, “The MM Samplers”. These two redwork samplers are absolutely wonderful and have a wealth of motifs. One of my favourite motifs is this little tree full of birds and fruits (or are they acorns?). I think this motif makes for such a pretty little picture, and I hope you will enjoy it, too!

The title for this pattern was taken from an anonymous 19th-century poem that I recently set to music and sang (click here to listen).

Birds In Winter

words: anonymous
Music: In Praise of Shadows

Come now, little birds,
You must stop in your play,
The Snow’s coming down,
You must hide you away.

You must huddle together
And keep yourselves warm,
In snug nooks and corners
Shut out from the storm.

Be patient and wait,
The clouds will go by,
And sunshine once more
Will brighten the sky.

In the woods and the fields
Where summer-plants grew,
The buds and the seeds
Are stored up for you.

You can seek them for food
When the weather is fair
And chirp your sweet songs
In the clear pleasant air.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

The Birds in Winter pattern is 81 crosses wide and 85 crosses high. Below the pattern is a chart indicating stitched size estimates and floss requirements for various linens and aida. Calculations of floss are based on working with two strands over two on 28- through to 36-count linen (or 2 strands over one on 14- through to 18-count aida). Higher counts are worked with one strand.

This design would look fantastic worked in Roxy Floss Co’s “Falu Red” – a lively and subtly variegated red perfect for a sampler like this. As an alternative, you could opt for DMC 3777. I will be stitching mine on Roxy Floss Co linen “Porcelain”. Linen and floss are available through Evertote in Canada (www.evertote.ca).

I wish you all the happiest of holidays and the best wishes for the coming new year.

With love,
Jacob de Graaf
