Description
This listing is for a PDF pattern, immediately downloadable as a file after purchase, so you can start stitching right away! After your purchase, you can download the file as a “Letter” file and as an “A4” file: “Letter” is the paper format used in the Americas, whilst all other areas tend to use A4 paper.
A “bonad” is a wall hanging in Sweden that finds its origins in the middle ages. In Sweden, bonads would be painted on fabric or paper, and then rolled up, so they could be hung in farm houses on special occasions. Just imagine the joyous colours these painted works would give to a rather dark farm house. The golden age of these painted wall hangings was the 18th and 19th century, and examples can be found throughout museums in Sweden.
Later in the 19th and 20th centuries this tradition transformed into embroidered cloths that have little sayings on them. Many of these bonad have cheerful flowers and colours and little “home sweet home” type saying. With the alphabet and numbers provided in the bonus chart you can personalise your own bonad (including some little ornaments that you can use if you use very little text). The text that I used for the cover art is attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882) although I have not found a source to tell me where it is actually from.
CHART DETAILS
This design measures 205 crosses wide and 137 crosses high. If you stitch it on 32 count, it will measure approximately 14 5/8” by 9 7/8” (37.5 x 25 cm). The chart has a total of 6704 crosses. Worked with 2 strands of DMC, you can stitch approximately 2000 crosses per skein of floss – this means that you will need about 3 1/4 skeins to stitch the border pattern. Including text you should have enough with about 4 – 5 skeins of DMC (or equivalent). As this is a monochrome pattern, you can choose any fabric and floss combination you like – and you can even get creative and use a multi-colour scheme!
