China Roses borrows a motif found on a Frisian cushion cover from 1831 from my personal collection. The original piece was fully monochrome and worked in black (now a dark golden brown). It has been faithfully reproduced for your enjoyment. The motif is also seen on samplers and sometimes was worked in colour, though I think it works wonderfully as a monochrome design. The design depicts several roses, a tulip, and some other flowers (perhaps a hyacinth?) elegantly placed in a porcelain vase. The motif on the vase appears to be a lady in traditional Chinese dress out on a stroll whilst a servant provides shade by holding a parasol above her.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This design measures 89 crosses in width and 118 in height and has 3570 crosses. Please see the graph below for size- and floss estimates. Floss estimates are based on working with two pulled strands (14 – 18-count Aida or 28 – 36-count linen) or one strand (20-count Aida / 40-count linen and higher). It is, of course, up to you how many strands you want to use for your project. A three-cross greyed-out overlap area is found on the 2nd pattern page to help you find your way.
As this is a monochrome pattern, you can stitch it in any colour or colours of your choice. I think it would look great with “Falu Red” floss stitched on “Biscuit,” “Buttercup” or “Speculaas” – all by Roxy Floss Co. (exclusively available through evertote.ca in Canada).
