Description
Elizabeth Gee was born in 1708. She was the daughter of Joshua Gee, an influential Quaker, merchant, and an original financier of the American state of Pennsylvania. I designed and stitched this sampler as a commission by Traces London, and an exhibition they are staging at Fenton House in London. The brief came with information on the family, and challenged me to interpret what an early Quaker sampler might have looked like.
I started researching early Quaker needlework, knitted pin-balls, and samplers from the early 18th century, and combining elements from my research, I came up with this design. The quote on the sampler is from the writings of William Penn, who was a close friend to Elizabeth’s father, and undoubtedly Elizabeth would have been familiar with William’s writings.
measures 145 crosses in height and 171 in width. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen, it would approximately measure 9 1/4” by 10 3/4” (23 by 27cm).
This 9-page pattern booklet is available for download immediately after purchase, with an easy to read pattern spread over six pages.
