“Fancy an ABC” takes its inspiration from folkloristic book prints and so-called “hornbooks”, alphabet planks used since the late middle ages to aid children in learning their ABCs.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
“Fancy an ABC” is a large project and measures 353 crosses wide and 451 crosses high. Below you will find a selection of sizes on different linen when worked over two threads.
32 ct: 221/8” x 281/8” (56 x 71.5cm)
36 ct: 197/8” x 251/8” (50 x 63.5cm)
40 ct: 175/8” x 221/2” (45 x 57.5cm)
46 ct: 153/8” x 195/8” (39 x 50cm)
There are various ways you can stitch up this design – stitching a negative or positive version, using multiple colours, or even going full-cover.
The cover image was envisioned by only stitching the black square symbols with light floss on a dark background. Both symbols have roughly the same number of stitches (just under 80.000). If you were to work it on 32-count linen with 2 pulled strands over 2, you would require a minimum of 40 hanks of DMC or similar 8-metre floss of either colour. Many beautiful hand-dyed flosses come in 8-yard lengths, which means you will need approximately 45 of those. Working on finer linens with one strand will significantly reduce the amount of floss required.
This design has been split over 20 pages. After the first pattern page, you’ll notice a grey band of 3 crosses high- or wide: this indicates an overlap with previous pages.
The pattern features only full crosses and does not have any specialty stitches. A pattern keeper compatible file is included in your downloads.
