A while back I was talking to Caroline from the Evertote shop about “Real Comfort: A Jane Austen Sampler”. We were discussing an accompanying piece of the same size. But this time I decided to go with that other giant of Victorian literature, Charlotte Brontë.
On the 16th of October 1847 Charlotte published “Jane Eyre: An Autobiography” (as it was originally published). Jane Eyre would continue to go on to be one of the most loved books in English literature and has been adapted into countless plays, films, series, and radio dramas.
The words on this sampler are from a dialogue with Jane and Mr. Rochester. He tries to persuade Jane to stay with him, and she struggles to leave him. Upon him comparing her to “a wild frantic bird that is rending its own plumage in its desperation” Jane retorts with these words “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will, which I now exert to leave you”. The words shine through with a spirit of independence and fierceness that many of us through the years have come to admire in Jane.
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
This sampler is 193 crosses wide and 193 crosses high. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida) it would measure approximately 12 1/8” by 12 1/8” (30. 5 by 30. 5 cm).
This design has a total of 12035 crosses. On average, you can stitch approximately 1800 crosses with an 8 yard (7. 3m) skein of floss. When working with 2 strands on 32 count linen, you will require a minimum of 7 skeins. I have recently started stitching many of my designs using Leo & Roxy Yarn Co hand overdyed floss. My favourite black in this series is “Chalkboard”. All of the Leo & Roxy Yarn Co flosses are exclusively available through www.evertote.com in Canada.
The pattern has been split over 6 pages. After the 1st page you will notice a 3-cross wide greyed out border: this area is an overlap from the previous page, which will make it easier to find your way on the next page.
