Description
There is so much joy to be found in this piece. I can just imagine the stitcher of this sampler going through her sewing basket, picking out lots of happy colours and elements to stitch. She opted for a border which runs on the sides and top, and a different border at the bottom of this design. At the top of the sampler she stitched a full alphabet (with the exception of the letter J, as is often the case on antique samplers).
She stitched a cat in the top left corner, then a peacock, an brown owl, a beautiful big rose, and then various pots with plants. On the lower half we see a bright blue heart shape with a tree-of-life and birds on it. On the bottom left of this heart you can see a three-master shipin a most primitive form.
Below this there’s a multi-coloured 8 point star, a very primitive looking peacock and a tiny dog. Underneath this dog she stitched her intials, IdM. Next to a large flower pot with carnations is a lady in a traditional Dutch costume. She appears to wear a red coral necklace and a striped dress with a checked apron. It’s hard to tell which costume she’s wearing, but based on the little ship and the general feel of the sampler, I’m tempted to belief IdM was from one of the sea-side provinces (Zeeland, Zuid- or North Holland provinces).
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
A word of warning: many antique samplers have irregular borders. Although the girl who stitched this did her best, there’s a few points where the border does not follow the repeat rhythm you’d expect. Note especially the border on the right hand side, where one of the diagonals is not 3 but 4 crosses long! There’s a few more of these irregularities, so keep counting and checking…
This sampler is 167 crosses wide and 173 crosses high. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida) it would measure approximately 10 1/2” by 10 7/8” (26.5 by 27.5 cm). Please refer to the key below for all of the required colours. When working with 2 strands on 32 count linen, you will need only 1 skein of each colour to complete this project.
The pattern has been split over 9 pages. After the 1st page you will notice a 3-cross wide greyed out border: this area is an overlap from the previous page, which will make it easier to find your way on the next page.
