Description
Joan Sands: A Scottish Hogmanay Sampler 1839 is a charming example of a traditional Scottish sampler, featuring a beautiful carnation border, a neatly stitched house and garden, and the traditional alphabets and family initials that are nearly always found on Scottish samplers.
Although I have found out many interesting things about the Sands and Hardie families whilst doing research, I have found out only two facts about Joan: she was born in May 1827 (even an exact date is missing, unlike with her siblings), and she lived with her parents on the night of the 1841 Scottish census. I am planning a podcast dedicated to her sampler, her family, and my research that went into the sampler.
This sampler features mainly full crosses, some small crosses over 1 thread (the date), and some eyelets (the large letters A to G and the border below). However, you can choose not to stitch eyelets but instead opt for a rice stitch or a similar stitch over 4. Even the date could be stitched in a simple backstitch, if you’re not a fan of stitching over one. To stitch this sampler, you will need the following colours:
DMC 310, Black – (115 crosses)
DMC 844, Beaver Grey Ultra Dark – (351 crosses)
DMC 647, Beaver Grey Medium – (795 crosses)
DMC 3024, Brown Grey Very Light – (1771 crosses)
DMC 822, Beige Grey Light – (164 crosses)
DMC 07, Brown – (107 crosses)
DMC 640, Beige Grey Very Dark – (41 crosses)

DMC 612, Drab Brown Light – (279 crosses)
DMC 3863, Mocha Beige Medium – (181 crosses)

DMC 3726, Antique Mauve Dark – (227 crosses)
DMC 975, Golden Brown Dark – (96 crosses)
DMC 22, Venison – (924 crosses)
DMC 3722, Shell Pink Medium – (1499 crosses)
DMC 3772, Desert Sand Very Dark – (61 crosses)

This design measures 199 crosses in height and 145 crosses in width. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida), it would approximately measure 12 ½” by 9 â…›” (13.5 by 23 cm). The legend in this chart gives the amount of crosses each colour has. As a general rule, you can stitch approximately 2000 crosses with one skein of 6-stranded DMC when you work with 2 pulled strands on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida).
The colours in this sampler were picked as closely as possible to the back of the original sampler – however, they are only a suggestion. Do feel free to substitute some or all of the colours to those you want to use. I have charted the sampler with DMC floss in mind – but you can stitch it in any material you want to stitch with!
