Katrin and William is a cross stitch design inspired by an 18th century Scottish sampler in my personal collection. I took various elements from the design and reworked them into the design you see here.

The pattern includes an alphabet chart which can be stitched exactly as seen, with extra space for personalisation. You can however only stitch the scene with the man and woman flanking the giant vase with tulips.

This design features only full crosses and just a few backstitches in the hair of the man. The large alphabets on this chart can be worked in eyelets – the chart shows groups of 4×4 crosses, but these can be replaced by eyelets instead. Note that the pattern keeper will not show the backstitches in the hair of the man – please refer to the original chart to see those stitches!

TECHNICAL DETAILS

The sampler and the alphabet chart measure 152 crosses in width and 115 in height. Please see the graph below for sizing estimates. The design has a total of 11 colours. The symbol keys on the following page give the total crosses of each colour for each chart.

On the 2nd page of each pattern, you’ll notice a grey area (three crosses wide) indicating an overlap with the previous page to make it easier for you to continue stitching.

You can stitch the sampler as shown on the cover or add the alphabet chart on the back of this booklet. The empty space on the alphabet chart allows you to stitch family initials – whether those are blood relatives or chosen ones. Women on Scottish samplers are nearly always indicated by their maiden names. The keys on the following pages are mere suggestions; you should replace any or all of the colours with your favourite floss colours. I stuck as closely to the original colours for my chart, but feel free to change the “ecru” shade for the skin to a skin tone you would prefer to see on this couple.

Below is a chart giving size estimates on various materials when working over 1 on aida or over 2 threads on linen. The last two columns provide the total amount of floss that can be worked on average with one skein of 6-stranded DMC (or similar 8-metre skeins) and 6-stranded 8-yard skeins (often hand-dyed flosses). Calculations are based on working with 2 pulled strands on lower- count materials and 1 pulled strand from 20-count aida / 40-count linen and higher.
