Marvel Not… is a sampler that I purchased at auction earlier this year. It is one of my favourite samplers in my collection, as it is so beautifully simple in its design. The sampler was stitched in the first half of the 19th century. Nothing is known of its maker, but the sampler was purchased from the Chicago area, which could indicate that the sampler might have been made in the North or North Eastern part of the USA. However, any such attempt to locate this sampler would be speculation.
The sampler features a row of houses / buildings (perhaps a little church on the left hand side), followed by three bible quotes (separated by a cute little border), followed by what looks like a field of diamond shapes in blues and ochres. Perhaps the maker saw this as a representation of a path or river with trees and bushes.
You can change the quotes to any text of your liking, as the design comes with an extra set of letters based on the ones used here, so you can stitch whatever you like on this design. I’ve left the colour choices completely up to each individual stitcher as well – only indicating what in the design is blue and what is ochre.
This design measures 247 crosses in width and 149 crosses in height. Stitched on 32 count linen (or 16 count Aida) it would measure approximately 15 3/8î x 8 1/8î (39.5 x 20.5cm). It has a total of 4349 ochre crosses, and 4482 teal crosses. When stitching on the material suggested above, it would require approximately 18 to 23 metres of 6-stranded floss of each colour when stitching with two pulled strands (3 to 4 skeins of DMC or 5 to 6 skeins of Weeks Dye Works floss).
