Description

Mary Harry is a period reproduction sampler based on the original work of Mary, a girl from an early Welsh Quaker family who settled in Pennsylvania, USA. Although Mary herself was not a Quaker, her sampler shows typical Quaker motifs and it does not seem unlikely that it was based on earlier samplers that she would have seen in her family and her community.

As the colours of the original sampler were so terribly faded, I decided to change the colours and just play a little to make this rather cheerful sampler which I am sure little Mary would have enjoyed.

The PDF booklet includes technical details and instructions for two specialty stitches (Rococo or Queen stitch, and Eyelets). It also gives more detailed information about Mary and her family.

You can also get a kit with floss, fabric and other goodies from www.evertote.com – make sure to check Caroline’s site as she sells the recommended floss individually as well!

TECHNICAL DETAILS:

This sampler has been charted with generous liberties. The hessian-like fabric on which Mary stitched was very uneven, and the many slubs caused her to sometimes stitch a cross over 1 thread, where it was intended to go over 2. This means that it was impossible to line up any of the ornaments and designs correctly. The 2nd problem I faced was the extreme amount of fading of the threads. I took inspiration from some of the shades on the original sampler and used it as a creative springboard for working with Kerri from  Roxy Floss Co to create an exclusive set of colours. Below you will find the recommended Roxy Floss Co flosses and DMC alternatives:

Chocolate Ganache – DMC 3371
Amaretto – DMC 420
Creme Brulee – DMC 3045
Silver Birch – DMC 524
Teal or no Teal – DMC 502 (light) or 501 (slightly darker)
Pacific – DMC 927 (faded) or 3766 (for the bright version)
Mollusk – DMC ECRU or 822 or 613

This pattern consists mainly of full crosses with the lower case alphabet and all of the initials and Mary’s name stitched over one thread. The large capitals A-F are stitched in eyelets. Above this you will see diamond-shaped symbols: these are rococo stitches (sometimes called queen stitches). Instructions on how to stitch eyelets and the rococo stitch are found on the next page. However, feel free to replace these stitches with a stitch of your choosing. You could decide to stitch blocks of 2×2 crosses, or rice stitches worked over 4 linen threads.

The sampler is split over 4 pages. From page 2 onwards you will notice that the chart has a greyed out area of three crosses: this indicates an overlapping area from the previous page. It’s there to help you find the starting point to continue your work.

Mary’s sampler is 115 crosses wide and 150 crosses high. Stitched on 32 count linen, it would measure 7 1/4” by 9 3/8” (18. 5 x 24cm). On 28 count linen, it will measure approximately 8 1/4” by 10 3/4” (21 x 27. 5cm). One skein of each colour should be sufficient to complete this project. As with every pattern, the key below is a suggestion – feel free to substitute any or all of the colours to fit your taste!
