Description
Mary Rannie, 1843 is my very first reproduction sampler. I bought the sampler from someone from the south of England, but my research into the sampler leads me to believe that the sampler was stitched by a girl who lived in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Although the pattern features mainly cross-stitch, a few borders feature a few counted special stitches, such as Algerian eyelets, a small amount of back-stitching and a row of rice stitches (or William & Mary stitches – a decorative cross).
The design has been lovingly reproduced for you, and takes in account several small quirks and errors that Mary made in her work. As Mary’s canvas that she worked on had some rather uneven threads, she stitched several crosses over 3 threads – a quirk I have avoided, as most embroidery linen is more even now.
Based on stitching your design on 32 count linen, it would require one piece of linen (colour suggestion Vintage White), and the following floss by Weeks Dye Works:
2259 Cayenne (2.3 skeins, 1924 crosses)
6850 Bluecoat Red (1 skein, 887 crosses)
2254 Cinnabar (1.8 skeins, 1614 crosses)
3500 Sand (1.5 skeins, 1364 crosses)
1106 Beige (0.3 skeins, 269 crosses)
4129 Swamp Water (0.2 skeins, 149 crosses)
1282 Ocean (0.8 skeins, 696 crosses)
1264 Loden (3.4 skeins, 3049 crosses)
1196 Taupe (0.3 skeins, 226 crosses)
1171 Dove (1.6 skeins, 1444 crosses)
This sampler measures 229 crosses in height and 170 crosses in width. Stitched on 32 count linen, the finished piece measures approximately 36.5 by 27cm (14 3/8” x 10 6/8”).
