Description

Mary Wereat – 1783 is a very charming small sampler stitched most likely in the south of England in the 2nd half of the 18th century.

The moment I saw Mary Wereat’s sampler I knew I had to add her to my collection, and chart her for you. This sampler is relatively small, but has wonderful colours and lovely ornaments, giving this piece real charm. Mary’s work is very symmetrical. The small changes in colour between the flower pots at the bottom and the not quite perfect placement of the birds and the heart give this design a slight playfulness. The verse on the sampler is from the book of Proverbs, 4:18 “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” (which she slightly altered by writing the plural of path).

Not everyone is comfortable stitching over 1 thread. As Mary’s sampler has texts over one, I have decided to create two versions here: one is a close representation of Mary’s stitching, and must be stitched on linen. This version is spread over 9 pages, and has some small adjustments where Mary stitched some irregular crosses. The 2nd version of this design features full crosses only and is spread over 4 pages. I have substituted the verse for some words from the book of John, 1:5 – “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”. I chose these, as they seemed to fit the sentiment of the original sampler.

DMC 223, Shell Pink Light – (186 crosses)
DMC 3011, Khaki Green Dark – (2691 crosses)
DMC 3364, Pine Green – (520 crosses)
DMC 167, Yellow Beige Very Dark – (819 crosses)
DMC 612, Drab Brown Light – (420 crosses)
DMC 613, Drab Brown Very Light – (145 crosses)
DMC 822, Beige Grey Light – (766 crosses)
DMC 927, Grey Green Light – (333 crosses)
DMC 3031, Mocha Brown Very Dark – (28 crosses)

This design measures 132 crosses in width and 166 crosses in  height. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida), it would approximately measure 8 2/8″ by 10 4/8″ (21 by 26.5 cm). The legend in this chart gives the amount of crosses each colour has. As a general rule, you can stitch approximately 2000 crosses with one skein of 6-stranded DMC when you work with 2 pulled strands on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida).

The colours in this sampler were picked as closely as possible to the original sampler – however, they are only a suggestion. Do feel free to substitute some or all of the colours to those you want to use. I have charted the sampler with DMC floss in mind – but you can stitch it in any material you want to stitch with!
