This design is inspired by Ursula Southill, a ‘soothsayer’ from Knaresborough in England. Ursula gained fame as Mother Shipton through a series of prophesies. She was a herbalist and worked to help the members of her community with herbal remedies and potions, and made several prophesies. Following the years after her death, the character of Mother Shipton took on mythical proportions, and she became more of a witch character. More and more “prophesies” were added to the few she made during her life, and they were all written by publishers who wanted to cash in on the name of Mother Shipton.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This design measures 121 crosses in width and 128 crosses in height. Below is an estimate of the finished stitched size on various counts of linen / aida:
28ct linen / 14ct aida: 85/8” x 91/8” (22 x 23.5cm)
32ct linen / 26ct aida: 75/8” x 8” (19.5 x 20.5cm)
36ct linen / 18ct aida: 65/8” x 71/8” (17 x 18 cm)
40ct linen / 20ct aida: 61/8” x 63/8” (15.5 x 16.5cm)
46ct linen: 53/8” x 55/8” (13.5 x 14cm)
I have charted this design to be stitched in two colours: black and white, on a mid-tone fabric. You can choose to stitch only the black stitches on a light material, which will also work.
There’s a total of 8057 black stitches, and 2807 white stitches in this design. On average, you can stitch approximately 1800 crosses with 1 8-yard skein of floss (when working with 2 pulled strands over 2 threads on 32ct linen / 16ct aida). This means you’ll need approximately 5 skeins of black, and 2 skeins of white floss, when working on 32/ 36 count. For 28 count I would recommend getting one extra hank of each colour. On 40 and 46 count you can do with 1 pulled strand: 3 skeins of black and one skein of white should be enough to complete your project.
I recommend stitching on a hand-dyed, slightly grotty-looking fabric combined with variegated floss. Leo&Roxy Yarn Co’s “Cousin It” and “Betty White” would be excellent choices for floss. The cover image was inspired by their linen “Under The Shade”, but any other medium colour that shows off both the black and the white floss should be excellent.
You can buy the Leo&Roxy floss at www.evertote.ca – but as ever, feel free to substitute any recommended colours and materials with your personal choices.
