A happy sampler featuring a large red house, two cheerful ladies, a verse and some plants and hearts.  Stitched in England in 1848. This design is charted for DMC floss, and features full crosses, some crosses stitched ‘off the grid’ (right between two crosses) and one small letter S stitched over 1. It is suitable for linen and similar even-weave fabrics.

Description

This cheerful sampler will surely put a smile on anyones face when they see it!

Susannah stitched this sampler in mainly in full crosses – one tiny letter is stitched over 1, three lambs have eyes that are backstitched (12 stitches in total) and the heads of the ladies are a half cross ‘off the grid’, where 5 crosses fit neatly above 6 crosses of the neck.

I have chosen to simplify a few stitches in the border where Susannah clearly made mistakes or tried to ‘fix’ things by stitching over one.

To get the best effect out of this chart, you can stitch on some subtly over-dyed linen, which you can either purchase or you can try your own had of tea-dyeing!

The key with this chart gives a colour suggestion – but feel free to substitute any of the colours recommended. This sampler would even work fully stitched in one single colour.

DMC 3011, Khaki Green Dark – (6004 crosses)
DMC 3777, Terra Cotta Very Dark – (2890 crosses)
DMC 3830, Terra Cotta – (2576 crosses)
DMC 8, Dark Driftwood – (733 crosses)
DMC 3781, Mocha Brown Dark – (1249 crosses)
DMC 3782, Mocha Brown Light – (1782 crosses)
DMC 612, Drab Brown Light – (862 crosses)
DMC 647, Beaver Grey Medium – (582 crosses)
DMC 3787, Brown Grey Dark – (96 crosses)
DMC 919, Red Copper – (383 crosses)
DMC 3371, Black Brown – (1367 crosses)

The sampler is split over 9 pages. From page 2 onwards you will notice that the chart has a greyed out areas of three crosses high or wide: this indicates an overlapping area from the previous page. It’s there to help you find the starting point from previous pages to continue your work.

Susannah’s sampler is 187 crosses wide and 241 crosses high. It was stitched on linen very close to 32 count, and measures approximately 11 3/4” by 15 1/8” (29. 5 x 38. 5cm). On average, you can stitch approximately 2000 crosses with one skein of DMC. For most colours you will only require one skein of DMC, but for 3011 you will need approximately 3, and 3777 and 3830 you will require approximately 2. Colours are a recommendation, but feel free to replace any or some of the colours to your taste.

The letter S in “hours” is stitched over one thread with one pulled strand. The heads of both women are stitched slightly off the grid: you will have to stitch on the half point in the stitches below to embroidery the head. This means that the sampler is best stitched on linen or a similar even-weave material. The three little lambs in the field in front of the house all have eyes that are backstitched with DMC 647.
