This design is inspired by traditional Dutch “Speculaas” biscuits, who are formed in beautifully cut wooden planks. The “mill” biscuit is still a favourite amongst Dutch folks!
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This sampler is 149 crosses high and 93 crosses wide. It has a total of 6394 crosses, and optionally there are 2922 crosses of a filling colour. Worked on a medium coloured fabric, you could choose to stitch the main design with a dark floss, and then fill it with a light floss colour of your own liking.
Below is an estimated size guide for the stitched-up piece on popular linen / aida fabrics. It also gives a floss amount. Calculations are based on working with 2 pulled strands of 6-stranded floss over 2 on linen (or over 1 on aida). 28-count through to 36 count are based on working with 2 pulled strands, 40, 46 and 56 count is calculated with a single strand.
The design is split over 2 pages. After the first pattern page, you will see greyed-out areas of 3 crosses high or wide. This indicates an overlap from the previous page and will help you to find where you left off on the previous page.
I highly recommend checking out the fantastic linens and floss by Roxy Floss Co, exclusively available through www.evertote.ca in Canada. They have a great selection of lighter and darker linens, and without a doubt, you’ll find a beautiful colour floss to go with it. I’ve been working for quite some time with their materials and can honestly say that they are my favourites to work with!
The pattern features only full crosses and does not have any specialty stitches. A pattern keeper compatible file is included in your downloads.
