The Dwarven Axe is a pattern inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books. I designed it for two of my friends from the UK.
When Tolkien wrote the Hobbit, he initially used different runes (based on Anglo / Saxon runes). It’s those runes I used for this design. For The Lord of the Rings Tolkien developed a unique set of runes, of which I have also included a chart.
If you have watched my flosstube channel you might know that I enjoy writing songs and making music. So to celebrate this new design I wrote and performed a special Dwarven Song which is included in your downloads. Some lines from the song are also found as the runic poem on the design
Break might my axe
Crack will the stone
My love for you
Never be gone
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This design has a total of about 14110 crosses, and measures 151 crosses wide and 195 high. It features only full crosses and no specialty stitches.
The graph below gives size- and floss estimates for a wide range of materials. Floss calculations are based on working with 2 strands on 28- to 36-count linen (14- to 16-count aida). Higher counts use a single strand. You are free to stitch with as many strands as you like.
As this is a monochrome design, you are free to select any thread and linen of your liking. Evertote in Canada has a fantastic selection of linens and floss. For the linen, Porcelain is close to the artwork.
