The Peacock Tree was inspired by ancient mosaics from the Byzantine period. In my design I took the idea of the peacock perched on a branch, and translated it into a tree image. I used the meander border from the original mosaic, as it is such a wonderful design, and is seen on many antique samplers also.
The Peacock Tree measures 85 crosses in height and 153 crosses in width, and has a total of 4516 crosses. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or over one on 16 count Aida), it would measure approximately 5 2/8î by 9 1/2 (13 x 24.5cm).
It would approximately require between 18 and 23 metres of 6 stranded floss, when working with 2 pulled strands over 2 threads on 32 count linen.
