The idea for this design came from a late 16th century Dutch wooden chest, which had a design of a bird in a decorative branch similar to what you see here. However, when working on the design, I noticed the importance of the negative space in these renaissance style decorations – and how, if applied correctly, they could be actually stitched in reverse and still give a fascinating image.
In this design I give both the original design, and a negative version of it (which has an extra one-cross simple border, to frame the negative space). I chose to include both versions of the pattern, as it can be confusing to stitch the negative stitches. When I made the negative pattern, I liked it so much that I decided to stitch my version as the negative of the version you see on the cover here.
My The Songbird design measures 63 crosses in height and 73 crosses in width (the negative version comes to 65×75), and has a total of 2414 crosses (negative version: 2461). Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen (or over one on 16 count Aida), it would measure approximately 4″ by 4 1/2″ (10 x 11.7cm).
It would approximately require between 10 and 12.5 metres of 6 stranded floss, when working with 2 pulled strands over 2 threads on 32 count linen (DMC / Anchor equivalent of up to 1.5 skeins).
