Some years ago I was doing research in the archives of the York Museums Trust, when I came across a tiny sampler stitched by Elizabeth Groves in 1822. I was moved by her little verse and decided to use her lettering and words on this sampler. I added the decorative elements and the alphabets.
This design measures 113 crosses in width and 144 crosses in height. Stitched over 2 threads on 32 count linen (or over 1 on 16ct Aida) it would measure approximately 7 1/8” by 9” (18 by 23cm).
This pattern can be stitched on any fabric, but a nicely hand-dyed, slightly grotty looking fabric combined with some variegated floss would look fantastic I think.
You can choose to stitch this exactly as is, or only use the words and the top border for a cute little pin-keep. Select your own colour (or colours) to make it truly personal.
Make sure to check out the Leo & Roxy Yarn Co flosses at www.evertote.com in Canada. These hand-dyed cotton flosses are wonderful to work with and come in a fantastic range of colours.
Working on a darker ground, you could even choose to fill the skull with a variegated white floss!
This pattern has a total of 4146 crosses. When working with 2 pulled strands of this floss you can stitch approximately 1800 crosses with one hank. This means 3 skeins (or any other floss measuring about 8 to 10 yards) should be sufficient to complete this project.
