This year, for Valentine’s Day, Caroline from Evertote came up with the idea of creating a unique Valentine’s box. And when Caroline asks me to do a project, I don’t need to think long and hard about it – it’s a yes from me!

So I sat down and started thinking and designing to create something that might capture the spirit of Valentine’s, but at the same time, it would still be something you could enjoy throughout the rest of the year as well. The pattern you have before you is the primary design from this exclusive box – the result of a very special collaboration with Caroline, Kerri (owner and floss and linen dyer at Roxy Floss Co) and myself.

The design was inspired by traditional art forms from the Nordic countries, showing floral motifs, stags, and, at the centre, a large folkloristic heart. At its centre is an empty space that can be used to place initials that have a special meaning to you. Perhaps you could commemorate a significant date here. On the next page, you will find an alphabet chart that you can use to personalise your work. It also has some filler elements, which can be worked in the empty space.

You can stitch the design with the materials recommended in the key (and on Roxy Floss Co’s perfect “Porcelain” linen) or choose your own colours – it’s entirely up to you.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Below is a graph with stitched size estimates for various linens and aida. Calculations are based on working over 2 threads on linen. When working on 14- to 18-count aida (28- to 36-count linen) with two pulled strands of floss, I recommend ordering 2 hanks of each colour to complete this chart. When working with 1 pulled strand on higher counts, you will only require one skein of floss per colour.

Thank you so much for being a part of this project. If you join in on this Stitch-A-Long, make sure to use the hashtag #StitchingSALentine in your posts when sharing your stitching on Instagram so we can all enjoy what you’re working on!
