For this year’s “Black Sampler November”, I wanted to design a Quaker-style medallion sampler.
All medallions here are inspired by antique examples, but are not (to my knowledge) actually on any real Quaker samplers. Octagonal designs are super inspiring to create: there’s a limitation to a small surface, and you have to stick to certain rules of symmetry (usually along the central horizontal, vertical, and diagonal axes). And most importantly, there’s the Quaker medallion aesthetic that truly sets these medallions apart.
These nine medallions can all be worked as small pincushions. I designed them in a shape that fits perfectly into the 4th project of the “Quintessential Frisian Smalls” design, released as a collaboration with Evertote and Roxy Floss Co. in Canada. Instructions on how to assemble such a pincushion can be found in the booklet’s instructions. If you want to work the half medallions on a pincushion, you can mirror them by turning the booklet upside down and stitching the missing half this way.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This design has a stitched surface that measures 109 crosses in width and 159 crosses in height.
It has 5108 crosses. Please see the graph on page 7 for size and floss estimates. Floss estimates are based on working with two pulled strands (14 – 18-count Aida or 28 – 36-count linen) or one strand (20-count Aida / 40-count linen and higher). It is, of course, up to you how many strands you want to use for your project. A three-cross greyed-out overlap area is found from the 2nd pattern page onwards to help you find your way.
As this is a monochrome design, you may stitch it with whatever colour (or colours) you wish.
If you want to approach the look of the cover, I recommend the following Roxy Floss Co. flosses and linens (all exclusively available through www.evertote.ca in Canada). “Chalkboard” is a gorgeous black with a light variegation and a soft green-ish undertone. “Porcelain” or “Buttercup” are great options for linen. As Roxy Floss Co. offers a wide range of colours, I recommend browsing the Evertote website to see what truly speaks to you.
