Although I have been living for quite a few years in the beautiful and ancient city of York, England, I was originally born and raised in the north of the Netherlands. First my family and I lived in the town of Joure (where I was born), but when I was about 10 we moved to the tiny ‘city’ of Sloten (with 760 people living there!).
My mum, a very talented artist and crafts person, turned the house single-handedly into a beautiful & inspirational environment. In this space she creates her crafts and paints her paintings, directly inspired by her surroundings. They reflect the tranquility and peace of the house. You can find them here in her Etsy shop.
I was privileged growing up in a house where I could make whatever I wanted to. There were always plenty of craft materials about, and I loved watching my mum making things whilst I would try and make my own stuff. It’s not strange that I was inspired by such an awesome woman and artist!
I’ve asked my sister to take some photos for this blogpost. She’s an amazing photographer herself, and her pictures can be found on her Ipernity page.
I won’t write too much here – I’d rather let the pictures do the talking, and take you on a trip through my old home and garden. I’d love to see what you think of the house – leave a little feedback if you like!

This is exactly the type of house and garden I dream of living in!!! How wonderful that you were able to grow up in such an inspirational space! No wonder you are so creative yourself!
What a beautiful home. So light, elegant and welcoming. I would love a house like this.
Thank you so very much for sharing your mother’s house and garden… What inspiration… It makes me look around my own home and make some welcome changes…
Thanks again,

Reminds me of Swedish painter, Carl Larsson’s home in that he believed in creating an inspirational, creative home for his family too. The colors are unmistakably Swedish…the grays, whites and blues. Peaceful colors, lots of open space. I see where you get your creative genes. Thanks for sharing.
